Cónocht an Fómhair falls between the harvest festival of Lúnasa and the otherworldly festival of Samhain. As an equinox, it brings a natural balance to the land before descending into the depths of winter. Farmers recognise this as a time to prepare for shorter, cooler days ahead. Dingle Grianstad an Gheimhridh. In Irish, this means the winter solstice, which occurs when the sun is at its furthest point from Earth, leading to cooler days and longer periods of darkness. Grianstad an Gheimhridh marks the beginning of a time of decline; fields lay fallow, trees have shed their leaves, and wild animals have settled in for winter. In Dingle, this is a time for friends and family, and long evenings spent together by the hearth of the home. Usually celebrated on December 21st, Grianstad an Gheimhridh is one of the two solstices, and marks the depths of winter.
