Pax44 introduces the Liberation Day Edition: a Canadian whisky in honour of 80 years of freedom in the Netherlands.
At Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen on May 5, 1945, German forces in the Netherlands formally surrendered to Canadian General Charles Foulkes and his negotiating team, including Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. Today, exactly 80 years later, a new chapter of remembrance and celebration is written with the launch of Pax44 Liberation Day Edition; a limited-release Canadian whisky flavoured with Dutch chocolate, created to honour peace, freedom, and the enduring friendship between Canada and the Netherlands.
The Liberation Day Edition of Pax44 debuts at the historic Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen, the site where the unconditional surrender was agreed and signed.
“Pax44 is about remembering the past and inspiring hope,” said Owen James, founder of Pax44. “This launch marks a victory for all those who have successfully calibrated the moral compass and upheld the warrior code. It acknowledges the unbreakable bond between the Netherlands and Canada.”
Combining the tastes of whisky and chocolate is the signature of Pax44. Crafted from a single cask of 18-year-old Canadian rye whisky, personally selected and gifted to Pax44 by the original shipper, the Liberation Day Edition offers a distinct profile. With a bold, earthy aroma and layered notes of caramel, vanilla, and an unmistakable spicy rye finish, the whisky is perfectly complemented by subtle traces of Dutch cocoa, appearing on the nose and lingering delicately on the finish.
Only 12 specially boxed bottles of the Liberation Day Edition have been produced for ceremonial presentation this year. These 12 collector’s items are not for sale and are intended solely to mark this historic anniversary. The unique cask will continue to mature ahead of a wider release planned for Liberation Day 2026.
Visitors to Hotel de Wereld and participants in Wageningen’s Liberation Day events will have an opportunity to sample Pax44 and discover the powerful historical inspiration behind the brand. It’s a chance to raise a glass in a cross-cultural toast to freedom, remembrance, and the moral compass.
As Prime Minister Pieter Sjoerds Gerbrandy declared in 1945: “We remember those we lost. We honour those who fought. And we look ahead to rebuilding a peaceful and democratic Netherlands.” Today, that sentiment lives on through Pax44.
