During Operation Market Garden in 1944 a German patrol trapped a group of paratroopers in a house in Oosterbeek. Instead of fighting they called a pax (truce) and exchanged Whiskey & Chocolade. To honour this moment PAX44 has created a flavoured expression called the Arnhem Edition.

A premium, 3-8 year blend, triple distillered Irish whiskey. Imported into the Netherlands at cask strength 65% ABV and then reduced to 44%, subtly flavoured with cacoa extract and bottled.

  • Triple distilled for power and purity.
  • Chocolate flavour and aroma created from a cocoa extract and a cocoa distillate.
  • The Warrior Spirit flavour is forged in the flames of the Hexenkessel.
  • Enjoyable. Powerful. Sessionable. Sociable.
  • Available in 70cl bottles, finished to a strength that commands respect, 44% alc/vol.
  • The cocoa mellow out the harshness giving a smooth impression of a mature whiskey.

The Warrior Spirit

In 1944, during the ferocious battle of Arnhem, retreating British paratroopers and a Waffen SS patrol found themselves in a rare and remarkable moment of humanity amid the chaos of war. The sounds of gunfire and explosions echoed through the shattered streets, but in an abandoned home, deep within the most intense battle zone, something extraordinary happened. The two groups of soldiers, adversaries by fate, momentarily ceased their hostilities. In a spontaneous act that transcended the brutality surrounding them, they called for “PAX,” a brief truce amidst the carnage.

Despite the raging conflict outside, the warriors from both sides connected over a simple yet profound gesture. The British Paras, holed up on the upper floors of the building, lowered a bottle of whiskey down to their German counterparts using a rope. In return, the Waffen SS soldiers, stationed on the ground floor, sent up their precious chocolate rations. These small tokens, exchanged between enemies, spoke volumes—of shared humanity, of the yearning for normalcy, even in the darkest of times.

For a brief moment, the abandoned home, surrounded by devastation, became a haven where the soldiers could forget the war and experience a flicker of camaraderie. They were warriors first, but in that fleeting exchange, they became simply men—men who longed for peace, comfort, and a connection that transcended the uniforms they wore. It was a silent acknowledgment of their shared plight, a rare instance where the brutality of war gave way to the enduring spirit of humanity.

As the whiskey and chocolate passed between them, so too did unspoken words of respect and understanding. The truce was short-lived, as the realities of war soon demanded their return to their respective roles as enemies. But for that brief moment, the battle of Arnhem was paused—not by the commands of their superiors, but by the innate warrior spirit that recognized the humanity in one another, even in the midst of war.

The story of this exchange became a symbol of the complex nature of war—a reminder that, even in the most bitter conflicts, there is room for compassion and the possibility of peace. The soldiers who took part in this act of truce were forever marked by it, carrying with them the memory of a moment when the lines of battle blurred, and they were united by a shared humanity that no war could ever fully extinguish.
